Harry Houdini made it famous- the straight-jacket escape! But you dont have to be Houdini to perform this great task. Every magician who delivers stage shows should learn how to escape from a straightjacket. And its really pretty easy. It takes a little practice but in a short period of time you will be able to wriggle out of this restraining device faster than your audience can wrap their mind around it! Heres the key: First, make sure the straight-jacket you are using is the kind where your arms wrap around you and where your arms can be lifted above the head. There are kinds where the arms are restrained by straps attached to the front of the jacket. This wont work.

I just discovered the incomplete diary from our 2002 World Lecture Tour. Fascinating stuff! We visited the USA, the UK, France, Austria, Germany and South Africa and did 48 lectures. We attended the World Magic Summit, MagiFest, the South African Magic Championships, performed with The Flicking Fingers in Munich, and went on Safari with Craig Mitchell and Tommy Wonder.

Table Magic

Table Magic or Table Hopping as its called, is a form of magic that is usually done in a bar or restaurant where the magician goes from table to table performing close-up magic. This actually improves the reputation of the restaurant, brings in more customers, and also provides great exposure (not to mention practice) for the magician. This is an art that even the youngest magician can get a start with. The younger you are the more easy your audience tends to be towards you. However, the older you are, the more credibility you tend to have and your audience will trust you more. It doesnt really matter with table magic, in fact it is a GREAT way for young magicians to get the experience and practice they need, and will help you become more confident with your people skills. Now this is not something you can just walk into a restaurant and begin doing. Magicians are actually employed by the restaurant. Its a good idea to subtly let your table know this as you approach them and ask if you can perform something really cool for them. Its also a great idea to wear a name badge. This improves your credibility. Both of these points also helps the members at your table to relax and not feel that they have to tip you. So they can just sit back and enjoy your magic

Prepare To Perform Magic Tricks Part 2

In the last post we talked about the importance of preparing for your shows. We talked about setting up computer files for each of your magic tricks so that you can know what is involved and dont miss a beat when it comes to performing. In this post we will break down each of those categories for your files and explain why they are each important. Trick name - this is self-explanatory! If your effect doesnt already come with a name come up with something creative for yourself. Make sure it is something memorable so that years down the road you can look at this trick and remember exactly what it is.
